Pond Woods is a one-acre sloping site nestled along a freshwater pond. Tree canopies and thick woods form the backdrop of the landscape. Project goals included shoreline stabilization with native plantings, outdoor seating areas, a secret garden with fountain, screen planting for privacy, security fencing, lighting, and stone walkways. Architectural renovations to the house, as well as a new garage and guest suite, meant that the work needed to be carefully coordinated in the small confines of the site.

The mission for the design was sustainability and a connection with the natural world. The play of light and shade from the existing oak and maple canopies creates varied opportunities for garden spaces and vistas. Since the house was a seasonal and weekend retreat, low maintenance was essential. Large stones excavated during construction are incorporated throughout the site. Use of native plants that stand up to deer browsing and air-born salts creates a natural and contextual feel throughout the site. Planting highlights include American and longstalk holly, inkberry, shore juniper, cryptomeria and rhododendron maximum for winter interest. Deciduous plantings include sweetbay magnolia, tupelo, clethra, woodland perennials, and hydrangeas for summer color. Bird and butterfly attracting plants are also incorporated throughout the property. St. John’s wort, ferns, vinca and perennial plumbago form a strong natural ground cover layer. Pots containing lavender and ferns continued the natural theme.
